Opening Day Letter From the Editor
Welcome to opening of Subparel. Our goal here is very simple, we want to seek out cool stuff that you can't find just anywhere and show it off to the world. To get a glimpse of who we are, a little about myself might help.
I admit to being a true blog, podcast, and magazine junkie. I love hitting a book store and grabbing the latest fashion, music, architecture, and general style magazines. I have shelves full of old copies of Dwell and ReadyMade, which cater to both sides of my personality. I read every clothing blog I can find and then I spend the evenings watching the ThreadBanger podcast to get my DIY fix. to I try not to pigeon hole myself into a particular style and I try to remain as well versed as possible, but I obviously know what I like. That being said, after everything I read/listened to/watched, I always felt like something was missing. Most men's and women's magazines have evolved into high-fashion rags filled with people who really don't look or dress like most of us. Even some of my favorite blogs had fallen into the same mold and while I understand that caters to a certain audience, it just wasn't me.
So a group of like-minded folks got together and set out to build a blog that was something different from the very beginning. We are men and women, moms and dads, and old and young. You probably won't see us pitching a lot of mainstream designers, but instead you will see us featuring folks we hope will someday be mainstream. Our focus is on apparel and accessories you can't find everywhere and when you do wear it, you truly feel like it is one of a kind. We want people to see it and say “hey, that is pretty sweet, where can I get one?” Frankly, we are tired of the amount of crap that is out there and we wanted a venue to show off some great stuff.

The entire team is also extremely eco-conscious. This doesn't mean we don't shower and preach “wear hemp everything”, but we are making an effort to change the way people look at fashion from a socially responsible aspect. We are trying to show that you can be green and wear cool stuff. Additionally, mainstream apparel and accessory designers are starting to recognize that people do care and have started changing their business accordingly. We have also seen an enormous increase in the amount of independent designers out there and some of the stuff that is being produced is just incredible. This doesn't mean we still won't be showcasing good quality items that aren't organic, but we will focus on designers and producers whose business practices preach sustainability and anti-sweatshop business models.
We also wanted to meet some of the incredible talent that is out there and you will be amazed when you start seeing what some of these designers have up their sleeves. The type of goods that can be recycled into something entirely usable and beautiful will astound you. Most people have a very negative reaction when the word recycled is used, but when you see what can be done... the possibilities are endless.
The bottom line is we wanted this site to be full of the cool stuff we would like to wear. We invite you to sit back and enjoy what we have created, subscribe to the feed, meet some cool designers, and we stay with us for the ride.
